Description

Built within the walls of the former Vatable distillery, the cane house presents the history of sugar cane since its introduction in Martinique in the middle of the 17th century, and pays special attention to the slave labor system to which it is intimately connected.
Having acquired the Vatable plantation in the beginning of the 20th century, Justin Mario transformed it into a distillery in 1916 to produce a rum he called "Le Soleil." At this point in time, three other distilleries were also operating in Trois-Îlets: l'Anse à l'âne, l'Espérance and Poterie. Its production would definitively come to a stop in 1962.
